August 12th: Fur Trader Manuel Lisa Dies
Manuel Lisa, a Spaniard born in New Orleans, was a founder of the Missouri Fur Company and kept close ties with the Indian tribes of the Missouri River, as well as Lewis & Clark.
A journal describing Lisa’s fur trade operations from 1807-1810 and recounting an 1811 expedition up the Missouri River sold for $1,400. The journal describes a man of great strength and character.
