July 25th: Jack London Sails to Join the Klondike Gold Rush

Jack London, of course, was the famous author of “White Fang”, “The Call of the Wild” and several other beloved books depicting the Alaskan wilderness.  In 1897, at the ripe age of 21, he left San Francisco to join the Klondike gold rush in Alaska.  Read a brief story about this trip here.

An auction late last year had a couple items of London’s.

  • A 5-page letter handwritten in 1905 sold for $4,500
  • A 2-page letter written in 1908 sold for $4,000
  • A 1-page letter written in 1915 sold for $4,250

In that same auction, a series of nearly 140 letters from King George III from 1766 to 1783, during the American Revolution, received a hammer price of $130,000. Click here to view the catalog from that auction, an intensive but very interesting look into history.
