September 26: Marty Robbins is Born
September 26: Marty Robbins is Born in Glendale, AZ
Marty Robbins, born of a harmonica wielding mother and a Texas Ranger father in 1925, was a self-taught musician and quickly rose from the Navy to the Grand Ole Opry. There is an annual tribute to Marty Robbins in Wilcox, Arizona, the home of the Friends of Marty Robbins Museum. In 2008, the town of Wilcox held an auction to help them become a big part of their historic downtown district.
You may not know that, not only was Marty Robbins a musician and an actor, but he was also a NASCAR race car driver. In 2013, Marty’s 1964 Plymouth Belvedere, the car he loved to race, was redesigned and sent to the auction block to raise funds for adults with high-functioning autism and Asperger syndrome awareness. Read more about the redesign here.
Watch Marty talk about horses and sing with Johnny Cash; they can’t stop laughing at each other.
